Is Solus any good?
It has a great package manager and fast Software Center. All commonly used open-source and third-party programs are available. Budgie desktop provides a unique experience of a modern desktop. Solus is overall fast, stable and reliable.

Solus (previously known as Evolve OS) is an independently developed operating system for the x86-64 architecture based on the Linux kernel and a choice of the homegrown Budgie desktop environment, GNOME, MATE or KDE Plasma as the desktop environment.
Which Solus version is best?
IMHO, if you have 4GB of RAM, or more, Budgie is the best choice. If you have less than 4GB, Budgie will probably run OK-ish, but Mate will provide a better experience with constrained resources. I am running Budgie both on Solus and another distro, on a 2014 laptop.

There's not that much pre-installed software compared to other Linux distros for beginners but you can download everything else you need from the Software Center. Solus works perfectly out of the box and can be used for pretty much anything, including gaming.

Solus looks great, especially with the Budgie desktop environment. It has all the features you need for an OS for gaming/media playback/browsing/general use. There's an official Steam integration for Solus which will greatly help you with installing and configuring steam on your Linux system.

It's stable. I messed up once by not installing all updates, only safety updates. So make backups and update everything. Solus software center is great but still a bit rough around the edges.
